The European hornet (Vespa crabro), larger than the common wasp, installs its nests in hollow trunks, barns, and frameworks. The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax), an invasive species introduced to France in 2004, builds voluminous pear-shaped nests that can exceed 80 cm in diameter, most often high up in large trees but also under roof eaves and in dense hedges.
