Food and clothes moths

Food and clothes moths in Paris & Île-de-France — SOS 4D Paris

Two distinct pests, two different sources: food moths (Plodia interpunctella) contaminate flour, cereals and dried fruit in kitchen cupboards, while clothes moths (Tineola bisselliella) destroy woollens, silks and furs in wardrobes. SOS 4D Paris treats both with targeted protocols.

Étape 1

Our treatments against food and clothes moths

Food moths

Treatment of food moths requires a complete clearance of infested goods before any intervention. Next comes residual spraying on cupboard bottoms and joints, followed by ULV nebulisation to reach volumes and hard-to-reach recesses. A follow-up visit on the client's request after 21 days confirms the breaking of the reproductive cycle.

Clearance and sorting of goods

Removal of infested goods, meticulous inspection of cupboards and recommendation to discard contaminated products. This step is indispensable before any treatment.

Residual spraying (TP18)

Application of an authorised TP18 biocidal product on at-risk zones (cupboards, shelves, hinges, cracks and interstices) to eliminate larvae and adult insects whilst ensuring residual protection.

ULV Nebulisation

Diffusion of an ultra-fine mist allowing for effective treatment of volumes and hard-to-access zones. This method complements spraying by targeting adult insects present in the premises.

Clothes moths

Treatment of clothes moths starts with a meticulous inspection of textiles and sorting of infested articles. Residual spraying is then applied to at-risk zones, complemented by ULV nebulisation for volumes and hard-to-access recesses. Sensitive items can be treated by heat or freezing depending on their nature.

Inspection and sorting of textiles

Meticulous inspection of textiles, carpets, curtains, dressing rooms and cupboards to identify infested articles and assess the extent of contamination. Recommendations for cleaning or treatment adapted to each textile.

Residual spraying (TP18)

Application of an authorised TP18 biocidal product on cupboards, dressing rooms, skirting boards, cracks and other at-risk zones to eliminate larvae and adult moths whilst ensuring residual protection of the treated environment.

ULV Nebulisation

Diffusion of an ultra-fine mist allowing for effective treatment of volumes and hard-to-access zones. This method complements spraying by targeting moths present in the environment.

Heat treatment

Thermal treatment of compatible textiles and objects allowing for the elimination of eggs, larvae and adult moths, without using insecticidal products.

Freezing treatment

Cold treatment of objects and textiles that do not support heat. This method allows the elimination of different development stages of moths whilst preserving the most delicate materials.

Étape 2

Habitat and behaviour of food and clothes moths

Food moths

The Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella) and the flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella) are small grey-brown moths measuring 1 to 2 cm that lay directly in dry goods: flour, semolina, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals, dried fruit, chocolate, biscuits, spices, pet food, birdseed. The eggs hatch into whitish caterpillars that weave characteristic silky threads between grains, in cupboard corners and under lids. The complete cycle takes place in 4 to 6 weeks at 20–25°C: a single contaminated package can therefore generate several generations before the first moths are seen flying in the kitchen.

Clothes moths

The clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella) and the case-bearing clothes moth (Tinea pellionella) are small golden-beige moths measuring 6 to 8 mm that flee light and prefer enclosed, dark and poorly ventilated spaces: back of wardrobes and cupboards, drawers of old linen, under carpets and rugs, storage trunks, attics, sofas and armchairs made of wool or vegetable hair. It is their larvae — small whitish caterpillars lodged in a silky case — that cause damage by feeding exclusively on keratin: wool, cashmere, silk, fur, feathers, felt, tanned leather. A female lays 100 to 200 eggs glued directly to fibres, and the larvae can remain active for up to two years in an unopened cupboard.

Étape 3

What causes an infestation?

Food moths

Introduction almost always occurs via a product already contaminated at purchase — the eggs being invisible to the naked eye — especially with bulk goods, paper bags or poorly sealed packaging (self-service grocers, organic stores, markets). The conditions favouring proliferation are then easy to meet: long-term storage without stock rotation, cupboards rarely cleaned thoroughly, ambient temperatures of 20 to 30°C, opened packets left open, crumbs accumulated at the bottom of drawers and behind jars. In catering and patisserie, the risk is aggravated by large packaging and difficult-to-access storage zones, which delay detection.

Clothes moths

Infestation almost always starts with a textile stored for a long time without supervision or by the introduction of an already contaminated garment: a jumper stored at the end of winter without prior cleaning, an inherited fur coat, an antique carpet bought at a flea market, vintage clothing in a thrift store, or a storage suitcase brought down to the cellar. Conditions for proliferation are then met in most interiors: cupboards rarely opened, drawer bottoms rich in dust, pet hair and dead skin (supplementary larval food), moderate humidity, lack of ventilation and seasonal rotation of items. Tailors, upholsterers, antique dealers and museum curators are particularly exposed due to their stocks.

Étape 4

How do you recognise an infestation?

Food moths

Food moths invade dry goods stored in cupboards: flour, rice, pasta, cereals, dried fruit, chocolate, seeds, pet food or spices. Their presence is noticed by small grey-brown moths flying slowly in the kitchen, silky threads inside packaging, whitish larvae or heaps of cocoons in cupboard corners and under jar lids. Even after throwing away contaminated food, new moths often continue to appear if the source has not been eliminated.

Clothes moths

Clothes moths attack natural fibres such as wool, cashmere, silk, feathers or fur. The first signs are the appearance of small irregular holes in clothes, the presence of fine whitish larvae or small silky cocoons in textile folds, as well as small light beige moths flying slowly in bedrooms, dressing rooms or cupboards. Carpets, curtains and infrequently handled textiles are also frequently infested areas.

Étape 6

Where do they hide?

Food moths

Food moths colonise areas of dry, temperate storage: kitchen cupboards and back kitchens, pantries and cellars, attics, shelves behind forgotten products, cold rooms and professional reserves. They also settle in recesses behind furniture, which explains why simple surface cleaning is never enough to eliminate them.

Clothes moths

Clothes moths flee light and prefer enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces rich in natural textiles: wardrobes and cupboards, drawers of old linen, under carpets and rugs, attics and storage trunks, sofas and armchairs made of wool or vegetable hair. This is where treatment must be concentrated, under pain of seeing the infestation slide from one cupboard to another.

Étape 7

Health and property risks

Food moths

Food moths contaminate goods through their larvae, silky threads, excrement and cocoons. Infested food becomes unfit for consumption and must be thrown away. In food businesses, bakeries, restaurants or the food industry, their presence can lead to significant losses, damage the establishment's image and cause non-compliance during hygiene inspections. An untreated infestation spreads rapidly to all food reserves.

Clothes moths

Clothes moths can durably damage clothes and textiles made of animal fibres. They perforate jumpers, suits, coats, carpets, curtains and other precious textiles, sometimes leading to irreversible damage. The more the infestation progresses, the more the larvae colonise cupboards, dressing rooms and storage spaces where clothes are rarely handled.

Étape 10

How can infestations be prevented?

Food moths

Before any treatment, all infested goods must be thrown away and cupboard bottoms cleaned with a vacuum. On a daily basis, storing flour, cereals and dried fruit in airtight jars, inspecting packaging at purchase (presence of webs or eggs), maintaining rapid stock rotation and regularly cleaning recesses makes any new infestation very unlikely.

Clothes moths

Regularly airing cupboards and dressing rooms, washing or dry-cleaning woollens before any seasonal storage, using airtight protective covers for the most sensitive items, regularly vacuuming cupboard bottoms and under carpets, and checking second-hand purchases or inherited textiles: these simple gestures are enough to make re-infestation very unlikely.
